Alexander City is a city located inside Tallapoosa County, Alabama, and according to an official estimate conducted by the US Census Bureau in 2005 the city’s population was over 15,000. It is a small city, though it is currently the location for the Russell Corporation, the maker of Russell Athletic apparel.
The city was incorporated as Youngstown in 1872 and was originally named for the founder of the city, James Young. The railroad came to the city just a year later and it grew slowly thanks to it; the city was renamed Alexander City not long afterwards. The name of the city was culled from Edward Porter Alexander, who was the president of the railroad company that built the railroad through the city; Alexander was also a Confederate general, famous for fighting in the Battle of Gettysburg.
