Cullman is a city located in Cullman County, Alabama, and it also serves as the county seat. According to an official US Census Bureau estimate conducted in 2005 the city’s population was over 16,000. It lies 50 miles north of Birmingham and 55 miles south of Huntsville, putting it directly in the middle of two major metropolitan areas.
The city was founded in 1873 by Colonel John Cullman; Cullman was originally a German refugee who fled the Prussian-dominated government of his homeland after speaking out for democratic reforms. The city he founded was based on these ideals and the area drew a small residency after it was founded. During the 20th century the city’s population continued to grow slowly, though Huntsville and Birmingham both passed Cullman by the 1950’s.
During the summer months temperatures in Cullman reach about 90 degrees or so during the day, with overnight lows typically dropping down to around 50 degrees or so. During the winter months, however, temperatures hit around 55 degrees or so during the day, with average lows hitting around 42 degrees overnight.
