The city was first founded in the early 1830’s by settlers who were looking to cultivate the fields and forests of the Deep South. During Reconstruction, however, the city was rebuilt, and by 1893 the railroad came to the town. In 1903 Dothan was incorporated and named the county seat of Houston County, a title it has held to this day.
