Founded in 1790, the capital was founded on what gentlemen such as James Madison believed to be a nessicary seat of government away from any one state. Because the Mutiny of 1783, where a mob of distraught soldiers attacked Congress in Philadelphia, it was agreed that the government would need its own place in which to protect and secure itself. This belief later found itself into our very constitution as an acceptance of Congress and our official seat of government. The white house itself survived many attacks, including its greatest in 1814 where a troop of British soldiers burned it to the ground during the war of 1812.
