Pocatello was founded as Fort Hall in 1834 by a fur trader named Nathaniel Wyeth. It was acquired by the Hudson Bay Company and became a major stop along the Oregon Trail, where many settlers would stop and resupply before moving on to the Oregon Territory. In 1860 gold was found in the area, and the resulting population boom put Pocatello on the map. It acquired the nearby town of Alameda in the 1960’s and today is one of the largest cities in Idaho.
