Providence is the largest city in the state of Rhode Island, with a population of over 172,000, according to the official US Census conducted in 2000. It is the principal city of the Providence Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is the 36th largest MSA in the entire United States.

It was founded in 1636 by a man named Roger Williams and was a major stopping point for colonists traveling from Britain. After the American Revolution the city became a major industrial powerhouse in New England and until the early 20th century the city grew on the back of its industrial sector.
