Sioux Falls is a city in as well as the county seat of Minnehaha County, South Dakota; according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 124,000, and it is currently the principal city of the Sioux Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of over 187,000.
It was founded in 1856 and a fort was quickly established in the area to help protect against attacks from Native Americans. The population grew slowly during the 19th and 20th centuries, with it finally slowing in the 1970's as the population began moving away from the downtown area of the city and into the suburbs.

Rapid City is a city in and the second largest city in the entire state of South Dakota; it is also the county seat of Pennington County, and according to the official US Census conducted in 2000 the population of the city was over 59,000.
